A dental implant can be a long-term replacement for one or more teeth, or even replacing all of your teeth at once. It can also be an alternative to trying to save a 'bad' tooth. If you lose a tooth in an accident or need an extraction, our dentists recommending acting sooner rather than later to help preserve your gums and jawbone for dental implants.
Not everyone is suitable for dental implant treatment, and we'll make sure you understand what the procedure involves and how much it costs so you can decide if it's the right option for you. To be eligible for implants, your jaw bone must be healthy and a suitable size to support the implant and your mouth should be healthy and free from gum disease.
If you have advanced gum disease (periodontitis), you will need periodontal treatment to get your remaining teeth and gums back to health, before dental implants can be placed.
A dental implant is an artificial tooth (also known as a crown) attached to a sterilised titanium screw. This is inserted into the jawbone where a tooth root used to be, giving the new tooth superior stability compared with a dental bridge that draws support from adjacent teeth, or a removable partial denture. A dental implant also stimulates the jaw bone, preventing bone loss.
If you decide that dental implants are the right choice for you, the process of getting implants is usually conducted over two or more appointments. During your first appointment, any unwanted teeth are removed and your implant will be placed and covered by temporary replacement teeth. If you don’t have enough jaw bone to support dental implants, we would provide bone grafting treatment in this same appointment.
Dental implants are typically placed under a local anaesthesia so you won't feel pain during the treatment. Alternatively, we can discuss other types of sedation, including IV sedation and general anaesthetic (at hospital) to help amage anxiety. IV sedation can be administered at our practice or at Southbank Day Surgery.
After your dental implant is placed, a healing period of 2 to 4 months isneeded to allow the implant to bond with your jawbone, soft tissues and surrounding ligaments. Once this bond has been firmly developed, we'll arrange a second appointment where our experienced dentist will fit your new crown, bridge or fixed denture.View Implant Pricing
