  • Your Child’s First Visit

Our goal is to help make your child feel comfortable when coming to the dentist. We aim to make the experience a fun one where they can get used to the practice surrounds, the dental chair and the person seeing them. We’re used to treating kids, in fact most of our dentists and hygienists have children of their own. This allows them to quickly build rapport with young patients and help put them at ease in a new environment.

On your child’s first visit, we invite them to sit in the chair or on your lap and start by counting their teeth to get them used to their new dentist. Once your child is comfortable, we ask to use a mirror to check their mouth. The dentist or hygienist will:

    • Check their tongue, cheeks and palate
    • Evaluate their oral hygiene, diet and overall health
    • Brush their teeth with a soft toothbrush or wet cloth
    • Demonstrate correct cleaning techniques
    • Discuss ways you can help improve and protect their oral health

Frequently asked questions

We recommend that children have their first dental check-up within 6 months of getting their first tooth. This gives us the chance to catch any development issues as early as possible. Regular check-ups can help to make visiting the dentist a normal routine as kids grow up.

Kids' dentistry includes their regular check-ups and teeth cleaning and general treatments to help prevent or treat tooth decay, such as fissure sealants and white fillings. General dental services for kids in Perth are free if you're eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS).

The Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS)  is a government scheme that provides upto $1,095 towards essential dental services for each eligible child over 2 calendar years. To be eligible to claim CDBS, you must:

- Have a child aged 0 to 17 years

- Already receive certain Medicare payments at least once a year

- Choose eligible dental services

We recommend bringing your child for their first visit as early as possible, preferably from the age of one year old or when their teeth first start to appear. We encourage this so they can get used to the dental chair and to identify any early signs of tooth decay or other dental concerns that may require treatment down the track.
