If you have slightly misaligned or gapped teeth, composite veneers can help improve the appearance of a smile in just one dental visit, although they'll require ongoing care and replacements over time.

Even minor crooked teeth can affect how your smile looks and may make it harder to eat or clean between teeth properly. Traditional orthodontic treatments like braces are effective for correcting tooth position and alignment, but if you’re only after a small adjustment for aesthetic purposes, cosmetic solutions like composite veneers could be a suitable, quicker and minimally invasive alternative.
This article explains what composite veneers are, how they work, and what you can expect from the treatment. You can then speak with our dentists in East Victoria Park to explore your options for enhancing your smile.
Dental veneers are thin cosmetic coverings applied to the front surface of teeth. Composite veneers are made from a resin material composed of plastic and glass, similar to the material used for white fillings or composite bonding.
During the procedure, your dentist applies the resin directly to your teeth in layers, shaping and polishing it to create a natural-looking finish. Unlike porcelain veneers, which are fabricated outside the mouth and attached later, composite veneers are built up directly on your teeth. This makes them a convenient, often same-day treatment for minor cosmetic adjustments, but like any tooth restoration, they won't last forever and require repairs and replacements from time to time.

Veneers are primarily a cosmetic dentistry treatment chosen to improve the appearance of teeth, but they have minor functional benefits. As well as whitening teeth and covering discolouration, veneers can also:
Composite veneers are most suitable for minor corrections. If your teeth are more severely misaligned, your dentist may discuss alternative treatments.
To be a candidate for composite veneers, your teeth and gums should be healthy, free from decay or gum disease. Your teeth should be strong enough to support the veneers, and habits like teeth grinding (bruxism) may need to be managed to prevent damage.

If you’re thinking about ways to fix a crooked smile, composite veneers have several benefits:
Considerations: Composite veneers are not suitable for everyone, specifically those with major alignment issues, such as:
Like any restorative dental option, there are potential cons:
Good oral care such as brushing twice daily, flossing every day and keeping regular dental check-ups and clans can help your veneers last longer.

If you're a candidate for veneers, your dentist will explain what treatment involves and tailor your personal treatment plan detailing each step of the process. Composite veneers can usually be placed in a single visit after your initial consultation:
Appointment One: Initial Consult & Planning
Appointment Two: Preparation & Treatment
Your dentist will give you advice about looking after your veneers and plan a follow-up appointment to check that there are no problems.
Composite veneers usually last 4–8 years, and with proper care, they can last longer. A 2018 study showed that composite veneers remained functional and showed no discolouration over a two-year period.*
To maximise the lifespan of your veneers:
Minor chips or damage can often be repaired without replacing the entire veneer. This is a key advantage over porcelain veneers which in most cases of damage, require the entire veneer to be replaced.

The total cost of your treatment will depend on how many veneers you need and any other services provided. A full breakdown of costs will be detailed in your treatment plan.
Cosmetic treatments such as veneers are not covered by Medicare or health insurance, but we offer a choice of finance options that could help to break down the cost of treatment. See our payment plans or contact our team to find out more.
If composite veneers are not the best option for you, your dentist will explain the alternatives for enhancing your smile. Depending on your needs and price range, these alternatives might include:

Ideal for minor corrections to small areas of a tooth surface, boding can close gaps between teeth and fix small chips. Your dentist can apply composite resin to these target areas rather than creating a full veneer. Composite bonding can be more affordable than treating a full tooth, but the resin will need to be reapplied after 4 to 8 years to maintain a balanced smile.
If you need to treat multiple teeth, or want longer-lasting results, your dentist might recommend ceramic or porcelain veneers. Unlike composite veneers, ceramic restorations involve two to three visits to your dentist, as they need will be digitally designed, then custom-made in a local lab based on impressions of your teeth, then fitted in place.
Porcelain veneers cost more than composite, and your dentist may need to remove a small amount of enamel first so veneers blend in seamlessly with your other teeth. you’ll benefit from more durable veneers that are stain-resistant and can last for an average of 10–15 years, or longer with good care. Porcelain is also a closer match to natural tooth enamel than composite resin, which can make the veneers look and feel more like real teeth.
If a tooth is weak or too crooked to correct with veneers, placing a dental crown could be an option. This involves preparing the tooth by gently filing it down and placing a custom ceramic restoration that is made of zirconia or porcelain.
Like porcelain veneers, crowns are made by dental technicians to be a perfect fit and then bonded to your teeth by a dentist. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can last for 10–15 years with proper care, but they can be reinforced with a metal core to make them even stronger.
If you have multiple crooked or crowded teeth, orthodontic treatment could be the best option for straightening your smile. Treatment duration can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on the amount of tooth movement required.
Invisible aligners such as Invisalign® are a popular choice for adults and older teenagers who prefer a more discreet and comfortable option than braces, and that can also be taken out when you eat.
While treatment costs are usually higher for braces or aligners, ongoing maintenance costs are minimal in comparison. Teeth continue to shift over time and to stop a potential relapse, you’ll be prescribed a night-time retainer to wear, and attend regular check-ups and cleans.
